COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Residents at Midway Square Townhomes in Flint are withholding rent because of poor living conditions, including leaking roofs, buckling floors, boarded units, mold, and pests. Resident Latonya Willis—who has lived there for 3 years—started a petition with 64 signatures to demand repairs and relocation help as the City of Flint enforces rental ordinances. ABC 12
- ➤ During the Fourth of July weekend, the 10th Annual Flint Water Festival at the downtown Flat Lot ended with no major incidents and heavy law enforcement presence. Mayor Sheldon Neeley said the event united families, elders, and first-time visitors (featuring a Bruno Mars tribute concert and fireworks display) and set the stage for more safe community celebrations. - ➤ Crime Stoppers of Flint — Genesee County is offering a $2,500 reward for information that leads to a felony arrest after Taswala Williams was severely beaten and stabbed on her 50th birthday, July 1, in the 500 block of Martin Luther King Avenue near Marian Hall, and she died from her injuries on July 3. - ➤ The Genesee District Library’s Flushing branch at 120 N. Maple St. will host its Paws to Read program on Saturday, July 12 at 11 a.m., where kids will read aloud to certified therapy dogs — including Diesel, a 135-pound Bernese Mountain Dog— to help ease reading nervousness. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Burton City Council cancelled the roundabout plan at Belsay and Bristol roads after local residents and Nehring's Market owner raised concerns over driveways and traffic, and the decision came after a packed meeting in June—voters clearly voiced their opposition. The council now urges drivers to slow down and stay safe at the intersection. ABC 12
- ➤ Genesee County Jail celebrated the 35th graduation of the I.G.N.I.T.E. program as former inmate Naatyca Holmes transformed her life from incarceration to employment. Less than three months ago, Holmes was in jail and now works with mentor Dr. Shan Jackson—who provided her with a laptop and certification funding—to help others get a second chance. Mid-Michigan Now
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Michigan State University and the University of Michigan have begun a research project to study Flint's rising cancer rates after receiving a $400K grant from the National Minority Quality Forum. Researchers will examine links to environmental exposures — including lead and PFAS — and plan town halls to gather community input on prevention efforts. Flint Beat
