COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On July 24, the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan received a $136,000 grant from GST Michigan Works! — the funds expanded on-the-job training and leadership development programs for its staff. The grant improved workforce readiness and operational efficiency to help the organization better serve families.  Flint Beat

CRIME NEWS

  • Over the weekend, multiple shootings on Flint’s north side in the 3rd Ward left two people dead and several injured—police said no arrests have been made as they continue their investigation.  Mid-Michigan Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • In Flint, the GearUp2Lead program is helping marginalized youth ages 16 to 24 earn a high school diploma and build job skills by offering education support, mental health care, and community resources—like free laptops and driver’s training—to overcome challenges intensified after COVID.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Flint City Council postponed accepting police training funds after a weekend shooting spree killed a 45-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man and injured at least seven, and one councilwoman said she will not act on the grant until Police Chief Terence Green meets with the council—addressing the gun violence outbreak.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hurley Medical Center in Flint opened its new reconstructive surgery center with a special ceremony Tuesday and Dr. Ihab Saab leading advanced microsurgical techniques on Rashelle Drive—across from the Meijer—to make care more accessible for local patients. The center offers improved options for those who would otherwise travel far for reconstructive surgery.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • A symposium on men's health was held Tuesday at the Flint Institute of Arts, organized by Men's Health 1st to address that the average male life expectancy is under 74 years and fewer men have a personal physician compared to women—90% of women report having one versus 66% of men. Doctors and professors stressed the need for regular checkups and urged men to use available healthcare resources before health issues worsen.  Mid-Michigan Now
