- ➤ A 54-year-old alleged domestic assault suspect barricaded in a Genesee County home and fired at troopers on July 31, and state police fatally shot him—neighbors were evacuated and a woman injured was treated at the scene. MLive

- ➤ The 43rd annual Flint Jazz Festival began Friday and continues through Sunday; downtown events include JazzWalk at Queens' Provisions, Cork on Saginaw and Market Tap, Saturday’s live performances at Riverbank Park starting at 12:30 p.m., and Sunday’s lineup opening with Gwen Pennyman-Hemphill (hosted by the Greater Flint Arts Council). ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Scientists at Michigan State University report that hot weather is stressing both managed and wild bees in Michigan this summer. The study published in PNAS shows that bees change their behavior—using fewer, stronger wingbeats and seeking shade—and that the heat also makes pesticides more toxic, which could harm pollination and crop yields. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Genesee County Board of Commissioners will move into a new administration building in downtown Flint on August 11—funded by the American Rescue Plan Act and a $10 million grant from the C.S. Mott Foundation. The building will consolidate more than 14 departments and cut annual costs from over $600,000 to an estimated $400,000 while streamlining services for residents. ABC 12
- ➤ The Michigan Department of State referred a complaint on July 31 for investigation into allegations that absentee ballots were improperly handled in the special Flint City Council election in the 3rd Ward—officials said the case involves a potential violation of Michigan Election Law. MLive

HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Rx Kids has expanded to Clare County—partnering with the Central Michigan Health Department—to provide eligible pregnant women $1,500 during pregnancy and $500 monthly for six months after birth, supporting about 300 families.
