COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy declared an Air Quality Advisory on Monday August 4th due to high PM2.5 levels, advising those with respiratory issues to avoid strenuous outdoor activities — the Michigan Ultralight Club will hold its fly-in event this weekend as enthusiasts watch pilots like Matt take to the skies.  ABC 12

CRIME NEWS

  • Flint police are offering a $2,500 cash reward for tips on the July 27 shooting that left 25-year-old William Smith dead near Industrial and Pasadena on Flint’s north side+ only tips that lead to a felony arrest will be eligible.  MLive
  • James Shirah, 23, faces trial soon for allegedly striking groomsman Terry Taylor with an SUV—an incident that followed an argument after his wedding reception.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Back to the Bricks organizers are hosting Tune-Up Parties—each with live music and vendors—in Shiawassee and Genesee counties from Monday until Saturday to build excitement for next week's main event. Car enthusiasts will see a variety of unique vehicles as they gather for the festivities.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • The Greater Flint Arts Council announced that 25 local theatre and arts groups — including Clio Amphitheater, Fenton Community Orchestra, Tapology in Mt. Morris, and Flint Community Players in Flint Township — will receive $440,000 in grants from the Genesee County Arts Education and Cultural Enrichment Millage. The funds will support local art programs and help more residents enjoy the arts.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flint Beat is hiring a government accountability reporter to cover local government and education issues in Flint. Applicants with at least two years of reporting experience must submit a PDF with work samples by Aug. 31, 2025—candidates need to live locally or relocate.  Flint Beat
  • Tomorrow, Flint’s Third Ward residents will vote to fill a council seat that has been vacant for 309 days after Councilman Quincy Murphy died in September. AC Dumas and Beverly Biggs-Leavy will appear on the ballot after a tied primary in May, and Dumas said he will work to unite the council—while local voters express concerns over ARPA spending and infrastructure.  Mid-Michigan Now

  • Hamilton Community Health Network celebrates National Health Center Week by hosting four free events—Hope and Health Day on August 4th at its Flint clinic from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Family Fun Fest today at its Whitmore Lake clinic from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Healthy Harvest outside its North Pointe clinic in Flint from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and Family Fun Day on August 8th at its Main clinic from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Yesterday, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy declared an Air Quality Advisory for high PM2.5 levels that reached the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (Orange AQI) range and in some areas reached the Unhealthy (Red AQI) range in counties including Genesee. Residents with heart disease or asthma are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activities and keep windows closed to reduce exposure.  ABC 12
