- ➤ A 48-year-old man accused of killing a 71-year-old woman in Flushing last month was ordered to undergo a competency exam during his Tuesday court appearance; he will be tested at the Michigan Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Ypsilanti and return to court on Sept. 30. ABC 12
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Atherton Community Schools is asking voters to approve a $13.4 million bond proposal on Nov. 4 to fund needed improvements such as roofing, new HVAC systems, digital signage, and athletic upgrades — if the bond passes, construction will begin in March with a 1-mill net property tax increase for residents. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mott Community College trustee Janet Couch resigned because she moved out of the district and faced conflict of interest allegations — the board must elect a replacement by August 27. MLive
- ➤ Local and state leaders announced that federal funding for the Flint Registry will continue through 2026—ensuring the program keeps connecting residents to essential health services after the water crisis. More than 22,000 people have enrolled and over 35,000 referrals have been made as the registry supports public health in our community. ABC 12
- ➤ LaShawn Johnson leads with 322 votes in Flint’s Third Ward special election, but the results are not official as each write-in vote is being checked by the county board—this process may take several days. The board is set to meet next Wednesday to certify the votes so Johnson can take a council seat that has been empty for over 300 days. Mid-Michigan Now
