COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Tuesday night, many car enthusiasts gathered at the US 23 Drive-in Theater for the Back to the Bricks event—where they saw classic and unique cars and watched a film. The week-long celebration will continue with rolling cruises today, a car show and concert on Friday, and an Opening Ceremony on Saturday.  MLive
  • On Tuesday, Flint and Ashley Capital celebrated major improvements at Oak Park with a ribbon cutting—Ashley Capital invested nearly $500,000 to add two new pavilions, picnic tables, and grills along with a 20-year plan for ongoing park maintenance.  ABC 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Koegel Meats Inc. is launching a new Flint Style Coney Sauce — made to match local taste preferences — after decades of producing Chili Sauce for Flint coney dogs. The fourth-generation family business named Cameron Koegel as Vice President and expects the sauce to spread across Genesee County and nearby states.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • The Flint Police Department S.A.P.P.H.I.R.E.S unit is hosting the 2nd Annual Preventing Sexual Assault Crimes and Empowering Survivors Conference at the Riverfront Conference Center this week and the event will run through August 15. Speakers including Claressa Shields and Mayor Sheldon Neeley will present their views on empowering survivors and preventing assault crimes.  Mid-Michigan Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • MW Gallery in Flint is hosting a free panel called 'Telling Our Stories' today at 6 p.m.—featuring artists Bob Campbell, Mario Moore, Tunde Olaniran, and storyteller Shani Womack with moderator Lisa Ze Winters. The event at 815 S. Saginaw St. coincides with the 'Figuratively Speaking' exhibition featuring works from the Mott-Warsh Collection, running through Aug. 23.  Flint Beat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawmakers requested a $65 million appropriation to create a grant program through the Michigan Department of Education that will limit K-3 classrooms to no more than 19 students—helping districts with high poverty rates qualify for funds. The Senate Education Committee discussed SB 493 and SB 494 yesterday in Lansing, including districts like Flint School District to ensure fair allocation.  Mid-Michigan Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flint City Council rejected a $225,000 settlement to end former fire chief Ray Barton's wrongful termination suit after his firing following the fatal Pulaski Street fire—council members said they voted against the deal to protect the city’s settlement fund and cited a court ruling on immunity. Barton had sued the city and Mayor Sheldon Neeley for $10 million.  ABC 12
  • LaShawn Johnson won a Flint City Council seat for the Third Ward when the Genesee County Board of Canvassers certified the August 5 vote, with her write-in campaign earning 322 votes over competitors A.C. Dumas and Beverly Biggs-Leavy. Biggs-Leavy has asked for a recount to be filed by 11:30 a.m. Friday—this challenge may shift the council from a tied 4 to 4 balance.  ABC 12
