- ➤ More than 20 local organizations will gather at Mott Community College in Flint on Friday, Aug. 22 for a free community resource fair connecting Genesee County residents with employment, housing, healthcare, and other support services — the event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1401 E. Court St. Flint Beat
- ➤ Hand of Hope will offer a total of $10,000 in grants to Flint non-profits by awarding one $5,000 grant and five $1,000 grants—community members can vote on the recipients in response to federal funding cuts. The community vote will help decide which organizations get the needed support. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ + Tracy's Corner is hosting a back to school drive on Friday, Aug. 22 from 3 to 6 p.m. + Local families can receive free school supplies at the event. ABC 12
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Flint man, Kevin Lamar Spence, 36, was convicted on 15 felony counts including torture, assault with intent to do great bodily harm and unlawful imprisonment for forcing a woman into a vehicle for nine hours and shooting her multiple times before abandoning her with life-threatening injuries on Aug. 18—he was found guilty in Genesee Circuit Court. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A federal lawsuit filed on Aug. 19 alleges election misconduct in Flint’s Third Ward council race by claiming fraudulent absentee ballot handling misled voters and led to an unfair certified win for LaShawn Johnson. Candidate Beverly Biggs-Leavy contends that the irregularities taint each vote and calls for a review of the results. Flint Beat
- ➤ Local and state governments must update their websites and apps to meet new ADA digital accessibility rules by April 24 for larger groups and April 26 for smaller ones—Fenton Township in Genesee County is adding alt text to images as experts warn that not following these rules could lead to legal trouble.
