COMMUNITY NEWS

  • GST Michigan Works! and Mott Community College are hosting a free resource fair today at the Flint campus (1201 E. Court St) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., where more than 20 local groups will offer help with housing, food, health, and job services.  MLive

FINANCE NEWS

  • A Genesee County woman won $500,000 playing a Triple Red 777s game after buying her $5 ticket at a Sunoco Gas Station on Miller Road — she is 38 and said she will use her winnings to buy a house and a new car while two $500,000 prizes remain available.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials announced on Wednesday that 20 small businesses in Flint each received a $20,000 grant from a one-time program funded by the American Rescue Plan Act — the awards were made in collaboration with the Flint Local Initiative Support Coalition to boost local economies and create jobs. This investment supports neighborhood economic growth and job creation.  ABC 12
  • The Genesee County Board of Commissioners named their main meeting room the Bryant (BB) Nolden Auditorium on Aug. 20 to honor the late commissioner who worked for local community services.  MLive
  • Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer celebrated back-to-school season at a community fair in Grand Blanc—parents discussed cost of living and education while children enjoyed food trucks, games and school supplies giveaways.  ABC 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local organizations are hosting training that teaches military cultural competency and Narcan use to help veterans facing mental health and substance abuse challenges—linking them with essential local, state and federal resources. The Genesee County Prevention Coalition and Veteran Affairs will continue supporting these efforts as veterans transition to civilian life.  ABC 12
  • More than 600 nurses at Henry Ford Health Genesys have voted down their new contract offer and plan to strike on Labor Day as their union cites unsafe nurse-to-patient ratios. The hospital said it will stay open with contracted nurses—each having the option to work during the strike.  ABC 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 48th HAP CareSource Crim Festival of Races has officially kicked off this morning at Crim’s new downtown Flint headquarters—organizers expect more than 11,000 runners to compete on Friday and Saturday. Runners can still sign up for events including the 10 Mile, Half Crim 5 Mile, 5K, Michigan Mile and Teddy Bear Trot.  MLive
  • Corunna football will begin the 2025 season under a new head coach as the team works to overcome the loss of key seniors from its 8-3 season in 2024 — returning playmakers Isaac Jacobs and Ota Wilkerson are expected to boost the offense.  MLive
