CRIME NEWS

  • 54-year-old Troy Bilkovsky was sentenced to life in prison—after a jury convicted him for the first-degree murder of 22-year-old Jessie Loomis during a robbery attempt in Thetford Township in 2022.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Antidote Fest is moving to Detroit today from 6 to 11:30 p.m. at the Detroit Shipping Company — the festival will give Flint artists a bigger platform and fund youth music programs.  Flint Beat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Michigan-Flint welcomed around 200 students to the First Street Residence Hall last Thursday—families helped them move into apartment-style housing as fall classes will begin on Monday with renewed energy on campus.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flint officials and the Flint Housing Commission hosted a demolition ceremony for the Atherton East Apartments on Thursday after flooding and safety issues forced most residents to move to Clark Commons + the site will be redeveloped into green space with federal and private investments.  ABC 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Flint Elite’s football team—featuring basketball stars Deion Wright, Jeffrey Turner and Razach Spillers—held a media day at Kearsley Park on Aug. 6 and plans to build on its state quarterfinal success in basketball to pursue playoff hopes after a strong 2024 season.  MLive
  • Imlay City football coach David Brown says the Spartans are showing a new attitude and improved culture after a 2-7 season, and he believes the team will build a strong foundation for future wins (their last winning season was in 2020 and they missed the playoffs since 2001).  MLive
  • Bryce Gross—17-year-old runner from Flint Powers Catholic—won the Michigan Mile race at the Crim Festival of Races on Aug 22 in Flint with a time of 4:46, four seconds faster than his run last year; he will run the 10-mile race today as his fourth-ranked team pushes to compete strongly.  MLive
