COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Peoples Church of Flint closed its doors after receiving a death threat online this past weekend—Pastor Hogue-Smith filed a police report and asked Flint City Council for better support when police delayed their response. The church will resume worship this Sunday with armed security as council members push for stronger safety measures.  Mid-Michigan Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Blackstone’s Smokehouse in downtown Flint has marked six years serving elevated barbecue in a space with high ceilings and exposed brick—owner Jerrid Heidel credits his 21-member staff for winning local awards in categories like best wings.  Flint Beat

CRIME NEWS

  • Flint police said a woman was injured by a gunshot on Aug. 22 near the Hasselbring Park neighborhood on the 6000 block of Susan Street — they have identified two male suspects.  MLive
  • A female was shot on Flint's north side in the 6000 block of Susan Street on Friday afternoon+ she was taken to a local hospital while police continue to search for two male suspects.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flint City Council approved $25,000 ARPA dollars on August 25 to help the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and Christian Love Faith Center improve food access. The council also renamed a former senior center as the Eric B. Mays Senior and Community Service Center and voted down a $99,000 police training grant—though that resolution remains on Council.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • In September, Flint is offering an amnesty period to help residents lower blight fines and structure fire cleanup costs—eligible residents will pay 50% of the total balance from September 8—14 and 75% from September 15—21 when paying in person or online.  Mid-Michigan Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 48th HAP CareSource Crim Festival of Races took place on Aug.22 & Aug.23 in downtown Flint as thousands of athletes competed in races including the Michigan Mile & Lois Craig Invitational, with local photographers capturing 16 favorite images that highlight the community’s spirit.  MLive
