BUSINESS NEWS

  • Flint gave over $400,000 in small business grants from the American Rescue Plan Act—three businesses received $20,000 each in the second wave and the city will award funds weekly until 20 companies are helped.  Mid-Michigan Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Flint area economic development officials defended a $259-million state investment on Aug-27 to prepare a more than 1,200-acre megasite for advanced manufacturing and said they will purchase additional land in the coming weeks. The site near I-75, I-69 and US-23 continues to draw company interest despite Sandisk’s exit from a planned $63-billion semiconductor project.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flint officials will launch a blight amnesty that lowers fines for unpaid blight and fire fees. Residents who pay from September 8th to 14th will get a 50 percent discount—those paying from September 15th to 21st will save 25 percent, with payments accepted in person and online.  ABC 12
  • Former Flint City Councilmember Santino J. Guerra was appointed to join the Mott Community College Board of Trustees—a vote of five to one led to his appointment following Trustee Janet Couch's resignation in late July, and he will serve until the November board election.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Riverbank Park in Flint has secured a $5M federal grant that will pay for new amenities—pavilions, picnic tables, benches, bike racks, barbecue stations, and sidewalks—to boost safety and accessibility. U.S. Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet said the improvements will help Riverbank Park become a key part of Flint’s newest state park and a welcome green space for residents.  MLive
  • Plans to develop the Flint River waterfront into Michigan's 104th state park got a boost on Wednesday when Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet announced a $5 million grant to upgrade Riverbank Park (from the National Park Service's Land and Water Conservation Fund) in downtown Flint. The project will add new features and trails (including links to the Iron Belle Trail) and will expand in stages later this year.  ABC 12
