COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 48th HAP CareSource Crim Festival of Races drew more than 10,000 runners, walkers, volunteers and community members to downtown Flint last weekend. Participants came from 410 cities, 38 states and seven countries and Michigan elite Nathan Martin and Dot McMahan won the 10-mile race — setting a new attendance record for the event.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Flint's population is growing for the first time in 25 years, reaching an estimated 78,693 residents thanks to historic housing investments and improved transit options—state leaders and the mayor plan to add more resources to keep the trend moving.  ABC 12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • In August, five Michigan companies announced 640 layoffs, with TerrAscend Corp set to close its 20 dispensaries and 4 cultivation centers and lay off 236 employees by Aug. 31 — the move will let the company focus on northeastern markets.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former Flint City Councilman Santino Guerra was appointed to the Mott Community College Board of Trustees on Aug. 26 and will serve until December; he has a background in law enforcement and community service — including his Flint City Council service— and said he will work to support quality education at Mott.  Flint Beat
  • On Thursday the Detroit Parent Network and the Flint Parent Collaborative hosted a back to school town hall in Flint to help parents learn strategies for supporting student success and community safety for the upcoming 2025-26 school year, and the event featured dinner, resource tables and panel discussions—strengthening local support for families.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Flint councilman Santino Guerra, who served for four years representing Third Ward, was appointed today to the Mott Community College Board of Trustees to fill the vacancy left by Janet Couch's July resignation—he will serve until December and continues his work as a federal law enforcement officer in Swartz Creek.  ABC 12
  • Flint has received a $5 million grant to upgrade Riverbank Park with better water access, benches, lighting and bathrooms. Construction will begin this fall and be mostly complete by August 2026 — Genesee County Parks Director Patrick Linihan said, as the project forms part of the larger Flint State Park plan.  ABC 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Genesee County held an opening ceremony at the Administration Building as it officially recognized International Overdose Awareness Day set for this Sunday, with addiction survivors and recovery groups gathering to honor lost loved ones and boost overdose prevention using Narcan — local leaders stressed the need for more federal funding to support these efforts.  ABC 12
