ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A speeding vehicle crashed into Starlite Coney Island on Center Road on Aug. 23 — the impact caused severe damage that will close the drive-thru for about 90 days and displace 50 workers as repairs begin.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A Genesee County family took over Blueberry Lane Farms in Otter Lake in March and has been restoring the 40 acres by clearing 2,000 trees to revive its 40,000 blueberry bushes. The owners will host an end-of-season celebration today — featuring vendors, music, and face painting — and they plan a volunteer service day on Sept. 21.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Flint native Spencer Irvin honored his late father’s legacy by returning to the Crim race where a 1992 photo captured him as a toddler running with his father—he ran with his own son and brother, matching his father’s pace. The family said the race revived cherished memories and symbolized hope and healing while continuing a long-held local tradition.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan State Police Flint Post is reintroducing its Citizen’s Academy—a five-week course on Monday evenings from Sept. 8 to Oct. 6—that teaches locals about law enforcement units such as the detective bureau and crime lab. The program runs from 5 to 7 p.m. at 4481 Corunna Road in Flint Township and ends a five-year break.  MLive
  • GST Michigan Works warned that the Michigan House’s proposed budget cuts may eliminate key workforce development programs—such as the Going PRO Talent Fund, registered apprenticeships, and Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates—and could reduce Flint residents' access to good-paying jobs and support for local employers.  Mid-Michigan Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • On August 29, Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley and public health officials held a news conference to launch a new effort amid more than 600 overdose deaths since 2021—today Flint City Hall hosts an Overdose Awareness Event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with free Narcan, community speakers and a flag tribute honoring those lost.  MLive
  • More than 700 registered nurses at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital plan to strike on Labor Day from Monday as they protest unsafe nurse-to-patient ratios and staffing issues—Teamsters Local 332 says the move is needed for patient safety. The hospital says operations will continue as usual while contract talks remain unresolved.  Mid-Michigan Now
