COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan is hosting events for Hunger Action Month to raise funds and support local hunger relief. The organization has partnered with HAP CareSource for a $5,000 matching gift—today the Flint Weather Ball shines orange for National Food Bank Day, with additional events on September 8 and September 17.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • The Haskell Community Center on Flint’s west side is adding Glen Kelly Field for youth to play football, soccer and lacrosse. The field will be dedicated on Sept 20—honoring longtime coach Glen Kelly who inspired local stars Mark Ingram Sr. and Andre Rison.  ABC 12

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire broke out on Sept. 2 at DI Enterprises on East Court Street shortly before 11:45 a.m.—the Flint Fire Department is investigating the blaze as owners plan to relocate the business and no injuries were reported.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • A Flint man is facing more than 30 felony charges for thefts in Thetford Township in August—he is set to appear in court on Sept 11 for a probable cause conference.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Sept. 3, a state House panel heard from think tank leaders—experts in economic policy—who said huge taxpayer-funded incentive deals, such as the $6.24 billion offer to bring SanDisk to a Flint-area megasite in Mundy Township, have not boosted the local economy. They argued that these deals have created few jobs and hurt openness in economic decisions—raising questions about whether such projects should continue.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MSP in Flint will host a 5‑week Citizens Police Academy that begins Monday, Sept. 8 (the program will offer residents a closer look at police work).  ABC 12
  • The city of Flint asked a federal judge to disqualify attorney Lawrence A. Katz and the Lento Law Group from representing parties in a lawsuit that claims police violated rights during a June 1 protest. The city said Katz is not a State Bar member—raising doubts over his eligibility to act as counsel.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • More than 700 nurses at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital walked off on Monday and continue their strike over staffing concerns—staffing ratios are too high, and the hospital remains open as the Teamsters Union seeks a fair contract.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Today, hundreds of nurses remain on the picket line at Henry Ford Health Genesys Hospital in rainy conditions after walking out on Monday to demand better pay and safer staffing. Officials said contract nurses cover shifts—union and hospital leaders will meet on Friday to discuss the new contract.  Mid-Michigan Now
