COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 300 Chevrolet SSR trucks gathered in Flint on Thursday—drawing fans from across the country to honor the pickup's 25th anniversary. Over 525 participants toured General Motors' historic Factory One—marking a special homecoming for the iconic truck.  ABC 12

CRIME NEWS

  • On August 30, a fire severely damaged St. Mark Outreach Community Center at 3020 Dupont St when someone allegedly set the fire around 2:30 a.m., and fire crews arrived at 2:55 a.m.—church officials said they are working with the ATF and local fire department to complete the investigation.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Flint Community Schools is offering new teachers a $12,000 sign-on bonus for certified teachers and $24,000 for special education teachers to help meet growing enrollment demands this academic year—measures that support improved classroom staffing. The district also unveiled renovated classrooms and new furniture as students returned Tuesday.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Earlier this week, the House passed a bill to create a Silver Alert system for missing seniors and vulnerable adults and a bill to expand Amber Alerts to include special needs children and those in danger; the bills now head to the Senate for approval—this measure will let police quickly notify the public using cellphones.  MLive
  • Payment letters for more than 25,000 people with approved Flint water crisis claims are expected to come later this fall as the review process continues. Special Master Deborah Greenspan said instructions will be sent via an official Flint water payment portal — claimants should use only that method for digital payments.  MLive
  • The MTA in Flint held a town hall on Thursday to explain changes for its fixed bus routes—plans that include on-demand rides and a free shuttle from the Northend Transportation Center.  ABC 12
