CRIME NEWS

  • Michael Tolbert pleaded no contest to nine charges on Sept. 8 related to a self-inflicted shooting that injured his daughter in early 2024—he is set to be sentenced on Oct. 27 for charges including second-degree child abuse, lying to a peace officer and firearm offenses under Michigan’s safe storage law.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Meter parking enforcement is back in downtown Flint after a pause, as the Flint Downtown Development Authority said drivers will now pay $1 per hour with a four-hour limit on Saginaw St—using pay stations on each block and a mobile text-to-pay option.  Mid-Michigan Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Cancer Society launched the Voices of Black Women study to learn why Black women have higher cancer death rates, and Flint resident Daria Ross—a six-year triple negative breast cancer survivor—will help raise awareness as researchers follow 100,000 women over 30 years.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • A former chief of cardiology at Hurley Medical Center sued the hospital because he claimed his contracts were ended after he raised safety concerns about practices that risked patients’ lives. He is seeking more than $500,000 in damages and a return to his prior role—allegations that add to past safety issues at the facility.  MLive
