- ➤ Mott Community College held a solemn ceremony Thursday morning at its 9/11 memorial—where a moment of silence was observed at 8:46 a.m. and President Shaunda Richardson-Snell stressed the need for compassion in remembrance of the victims. Mid-Michigan Now

- ➤ The City of Flint awarded its final wave of $20,000 grants on Thursday downtown — 10 small businesses received their checks as part of a summer program. In total, the city distributed $400,000 to 20 local businesses to honor their status as small business champions. Mid-Michigan Now

- ➤ The MW Gallery in downtown Flint opens today a new art exhibit titled “This Bitter Earth: Living in Harmony with Nature” that features works from the Mott-Warsh Collection by artists including Ron Adams, Bisa Butler, Nanette Carter, Nick Cave, Emilio Cruz, Maren Hassinger, Pope.L, Howardena Pindell, Angelbert Metoyer and Bernard Williams—this exhibit will run until Jan 24 and is free to the public. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Flint schools began the new academic year today at Freeman Elementary where students enjoyed interactive activities and a book fair—principal Cookenmaster and Superintendent Jones noted growing enrollment and stressed the need to improve reading and math skills. A total of 320 students have reported so far as the district builds a strong start for learning. MLive

- ➤ Six new CASA volunteers were sworn in Thursday by Judge Mary Hood in Genesee County to serve as voices for children in foster care—each volunteer has received training and will begin their cases immediately as Voices for Children seeks 40 to 50 more advocates to help serve over 500 kids in the system. - ➤ Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley announced that the Flint Police Department is offering free active shooter training to local organizations, businesses, churches, and schools. The program will connect groups with a specially trained officer — helping them prepare for potential threats. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ Flint police sergeants received a new contract after the city council unanimously approved a deal for 24 sergeants on Sept. 10. Support for a $300,000 investment in the North Flint Food Market fell short of the required votes—leaving the market to seek alternative funding. MLive

- ➤ Henry Ford Genesys Hospital and Teamsters Local 332 have stalled contract talks as the nurse strike enters its 11th day, leaving patient care concerns in Genesee County.
