  • Van Steyn and Feuerherm will begin construction next month on the Sit Down Tap Room — a new downtown pizzeria honoring the 1936 Flint Sit-Down Strike — in a 1913 brick house on South Grand Traverse. City council members support the project as it seeks an OPRA designation for a state build grant needed to finish the $950,000 renovation and bring historic design elements to life.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mott Community College is launching its 2026-2027 strategic planning process and is asking residents to share input through a 15-minute survey open until 5 p.m. on Oct. 3 — the college will hold listening sessions on Sept. 18 in Clio and Lapeer and on Sept. 19 in Fenton and Flint.  ABC 12
  • Mott Community College is asking community members to help shape its strategic plan for the 2026-2027 school year by completing a confidential online survey that takes about 15 minutes. Listening sessions will be held in Clio on September 18 from noon to 2 p.m.—in Lapeer on September 18 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.—in Fenton on September 19 from noon to 2 p.m.—and in Flint on September 19 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.  Mid-Michigan Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan Sugar fixed a malfunction at its Croswell facility after sugar beet pulp dust spread beyond the plant during its 2025 harvest. The company halted the drying equipment on Sept. 8 for inspection and repair—neighbors can contact it with any questions.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • UM-Flint is partnering with the Flint Alliance for Immigrant Rights to host a Constitution Day event on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m. in the University Center’s Happenings Room — FAIR speakers will discuss immigrant rights and community resources as the event stays free and open to the public with refreshments served.  MLive
  • Former Fire Chief Raymond Barton received $225,000 to settle his 2023 wrongful termination case against Mayor Sheldon Neeley after City Council approved the settlement on September 10—resolving his long-standing complaint over his firing.  MLive
  • Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson called for unity as rising political violence has hurt families and local officials. He said leaders must use careful words and that law enforcement will act on every threat — urging everyone to come together.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • A retired political science professor from Mott Community College said political violence and deep party divides are growing in Flint and across the nation. Paul Rozycki explained that social media makes the divide worse — but he noted there is still common ground on many issues before the midterm elections.  ABC 12
  • Michigan's fall turkey season will run from Sept. 15 to Nov. 14 and hundreds of hunters are expected to buy one license to hunt one bird on designated units. The DNR said hunters must validate digital tags immediately after a harvest—ensuring all rules are followed.  MLive
