COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Genesee County Animal Control reported today that a steady rise in dog intake has overfilled the shelter and forced staff to double bunk animals in limited kennels, which makes adoptions harder. The shelter now urges community members to adopt, foster, or volunteer—measures needed to ease the stress on the animals.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Hundreds gathered last Sunday evening in Flushing for a candlelight vigil at the Police and Firefighter Memorial Wall on Coutant Street to honor conservative activist Charlie Kirk after his shooting in Utah last week. The community prayed and sang 'God Bless America'—calling for unity and peace.  ABC 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Terry Thomas, who built the Halo Burger chain by treating employees like family, died Sept. 11 at age 85 in Flint. His family said that honoring him with a Kewpee deluxe with olives and a Boston Cooler will make him smile—plans to reopen the downtown location are underway with a new owner.  MLive
  • A new craft retreat business, The Night Owl Craft Retreat, opened in Burton and now hosts groups of up to 8 people—offering a creative space for locals.  ABC 12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Monday, 20 Flint small business owners each received a $20,000 grant from the Flint Small Business Fund to help recover from COVID-19 challenges. The grants—backed by ARPA dollars and set up by local groups—will support businesses as they continue serving customers.  Mid-Michigan Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Genesee Intermediate School District will host its Fall Career Fair on Oct. 2 at the Genesee Career Institute Conference Center in Mundy Township where job seekers can attend on-site interviews for positions from early childhood teachers to custodial workers. Applicants offered a role will have their fingerprinting and background check costs covered by the district—helping reduce expenses during their job search.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rx Kids gives new mothers in Flint $1500 during pregnancy and $500 each month until their baby turns one—research shows the program reduces preterm births by 18% and low birth weight by 27%, and 1,978 Flint families have enrolled so far. The initiative now supports families in 11 Michigan communities.  ABC 12
  • On Sep 15, 2025, Katie Krimitsos of the Women's Mediation Network advised that kids overwhelmed by homework try meditation—she offered simple techniques to help ease stress. Her advice may support students in managing school challenges effectively.  ABC 12

  • Flint sports fans are voting for standout Football Player nominees from Week 3—voting will remain open until 9 a.m. Sept. 19 with fans allowed to vote as often as they wish.  MLive
  • Senior quarterback D'Marion Erlenbeck led Clio to its best start since 1996 with five touchdowns in a 48—22 win over Corunna on Friday, September 12—earning him a Flint-area Friday Night Hero award. This win marked a turning point for the team as it rebuilt confidence after past struggles.  MLive
