BUSINESS NEWS

  • Flint Bishop Airport will launch a new parking system using AI technology from Metropolis—travelers can sign up on the app now and use automatic payments and notifications when parking, and the system will start on October 1.  Mid-Michigan Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the Levitt Amp Music Series kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month in Flint as Mexicuba performed live at Totem Books on Court Street — the series will offer free Latin music concerts through September 30th.  Mid-Michigan Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Longtime educator Craig Douglas said the state budget shortfall raised concerns about support for schools in Mid-Michigan—he noted that limited funds could hinder education quality. He urged looking into ways to improve funding amid ongoing budget cuts.  ABC 12
  • UM-Flint recorded its highest student enrollment since 2019 for this fall semester with 7,124 students — nearly a 10% increase from last fall. University officials said improved retention and campus efforts have driven the growth.  ABC 12
  • KaSandra Cookenmaster, a seasoned educator with 30 years of experience, is now the principal at Freeman Elementary School in Flint—she will focus on building a positive school climate and raising academic expectations for about 320 students.  MLive
  • The Michigan School for the Deaf in Flint is planning a new $40 million dormitory to replace its outdated student housing from 1948—designed to include modern deaf-friendly features for 108 students. The Michigan Department of Education will soon issue proposals for construction at 1235 W. Court St.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On September 16th, community leaders gathered at Genesee County Jail to help inmates register to vote for National Voter Registration Day (NAACP and Michigan Bureau of Elections were present). Inmates who have not been convicted are allowed to vote under Michigan law.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • The Genesee County Board of Commissioners is filling a road commission seat with a term ending Dec 31 and two library board seats with terms ending Aug 31. The application window stays open until Oct 15 and Commissioner Shaun Shumaker said the appointments are key to county progress—residents should apply promptly.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • The Flint City Council voted 4—3 on a resolution to endorse federal legislation that would deter police misconduct but did not reach the required support for a full vote on the George Floyd Act; the council will move ahead with a proposal on a loitering unit.  MLive
  • Linden city council approved $214,775 to renovate the Loose Senior Center annex, which will update the kitchen, bathrooms, carpeting, and ceiling—construction will begin Sept. 29 and is expected to finish by January.  MLive

  • Pro boxer DeAndre Savage stopped by Good Morning Mid-Michigan to discuss his upcoming fight and will face Brandon Moore this Friday, Sept. 19 at the Fox Theatre in Detroit—his remarks set the stage for a competitive bout.  ABC 12
