- ➤ A large fire broke out at the IBEW-NECA Electrical Industry Training Center near Bishop International Airport in Flint Township on Wednesday at 10:50 a.m., with an explosion heard and heavy smoke seen as multiple Genesee County fire departments battled the blaze until it was mostly contained by 11:45 a.m. (no injuries have been reported). - ➤ Michigan State Police launched the 'opening the door' campaign to educate families on digital safety and prevent online child exploitation by running a public service announcement through December, following 472 search warrants and 145 arrests by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force in 2024 — local officials urge parents to stay alert to digital grooming risks. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ More than 35,000 Michigan students experienced homelessness during the 2023-2024 school year, up from 32,000 and facing challenges with attendance and graduation. Shelly Hoffman of the Shelter of Flint said tighter housing and economic conditions are pushing the rise—emergency housing, enrichment programs and McKinney-Vento support help keep students in school. - ➤ Flint Community Schools revealed plans at Wednesday night’s board meeting for a new high school that will replace the long-vacant Flint Central and Whittier Elementary School buildings—most of the existing structures will be demolished, and the project design incorporates community ideas supported by a grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.
