COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Kevin Davis of Linden lost his wallet at Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken on Miller Road in Flint, and co-owners Jason Hussein and Abdul Ayish later returned it intact. Kevin expressed relief—thankful for the honesty shown by the restaurant—and said the act restored his faith in good community values. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ Dozens of veterans returned home Wednesday from a Mid-Michigan Honor Flight trip to see war memorials in Washington, D.C.—they were welcomed at Bishop International Airport and many experienced these special sites for the first time. ABC 12
- ➤ Gennois Wiggins, director of Mays Senior and Community Service Center, said the center will host a Grandfather and Granddaughter dance and an Age of Splendor pageant for seniors in the Flint community—events designed to offer local seniors new ways to connect. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ The Flint Farmers Market hosted a community development mixer on Thursday. Local leaders, residents, and changemakers gathered—sharing ideas and building new connections over refreshments and music. Mid-Michigan Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Mott Community College is gathering community input for its 2026-2027 strategic plan — in-person listening sessions will take place on the Flint campus and an online survey is open until Oct. 3. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ Flint Community Schools presented plans for a new high school on the historic site of the closed Flint Central High School and Whittier Elementary during a board meeting. Superintendent Kevelin Jones said the design—costing about $135 million—will include new athletic fields and a theater and will keep parts of the original building, with construction starting once funding is secured. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Genesee County Land Bank is cleaning up neglected properties in Flint to improve neighborhood safety. Volunteers will gather this Saturday on Carton Street — they will remove dumped trash and install rock barriers to deter future dumping. ABC 12
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office hosted the Second Chance Resource Expo Thursday to help former inmates and crime victims access vital services such as driver restoration, IDs and job placements. Sheriff Swanson said residents needing help can visit the Genesee County Jail at any time — his office provided the expo to guide those in need. Mid-Michigan Now
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Local health professionals warn that 7-OH—a synthetic by-product of kratom sold legally in stores—can lead to severe withdrawal, psychosis and overdoses that may reverse gains in reducing opioid deaths. The FDA has urged the DEA to reclassify the drug as a Schedule 1 substance. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ Genesee Health Plan will host its free Healthcare Tune Up event on Thursday, Sept. 25 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.—offering local residents a chance to learn basic health tips and resources for better care. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ Negotiations resumed Thursday at Genesys Hospital between striking nurses and Henry Ford Health as both sides argued over nurse-to-patient ratios — teamsters said their contract offer had not been addressed and an additional meeting is planned. The dispute remains unresolved as they work to end the strike. ABC 12
