COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Flint Township residents in the Van Slyke Manor neighborhood are upset as General Motors clears dozens of trees to expand a storage lot for extra pick up trucks. The board rezoned 29 acres for about 8,000 trucks and residents worry that the loss of wooded land will reduce wildlife—GM has not yet commented while construction noise has disturbed early mornings.  ABC 12
  • A new community food pantry opened Monday at Gloria Coles Public Library in Flint—funded by Big John’s Steak & Onion, Friends of the Library and Genisys Credit Union—and it will operate only on Saturdays.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • The Case of the Missing Mascot event will be held on Friday, Sept. 26 at Mott Community College Library and will benefit Crime Stoppers of Flint & Genesee County.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Flint Repertory Theatre presents 'A Streetcar Named Desire' which opened September 19 and will run until October 5—offering local audiences a chance to see this classic drama performed live. The production continues to build excitement in the community as it brings a beloved play to stage.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, Flint City Council's Special Affairs Committee voted 5—4 to move a resolution that would form an anti-loitering task force with support from retired officers, NSO officers, and peer Recovery Coaches. The resolution now awaits a final council vote while some members say current ordinances and enforcement are enough.  ABC 12
  • State Senator John Cherry from District 27 supported a new Building Blocks Bill to expand the Rx Kids program—giving eligible mothers $1,500 during pregnancy and $500 each month for six months. He held a roundtable at Flint Farmers' Market on Monday with community leaders and parents to discuss the proposal.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • The city closed a section of Beach Street in downtown Flint on Sept. 22 for electrical work by Motor City Electric Utilities on behalf of Consumers Energy—drivers are advised to avoid the area until Oct. 31.  MLive
  • Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley asked U.S. District Court Judge Judith E. Levy for extra resources during a City Hall news conference on Sept. 22 due to delays in distributing a nearly $700 million water crisis settlement. He said a local office is needed to help more than 25,000 residents—most of whom are children exposed to Flint River water—with their claims.  MLive

  • The Fighting Mental Health organization will hold a seminar on October 4 in Flint—details will be shared by the organization.  ABC 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Flint-area Genesee senior Brandon Rouse rushed for 236 yards and made eight tackles on Friday night as his team defeated Burton Bentley 20-3—earning his status as a local hero.  MLive
