- ➤ The Flushing Harvest Fest will take place Saturday, Sept. 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with live music, contests and health services on Main Street and Riverview Park—organized by local groups. MLive
- ➤ Impact100 Genesee County hosted a Big Give event at the Sloan Museum where five nonprofits pitched for an $87,000 grant. St. Francis Prayer Center won the grant—while the other finalists will share $5,000 each to support their work in the community. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ Community members and food leaders gathered at Flint Farmers Market today for the bi-annual Flint Food Summit to discuss healthy, sustainable locally sourced food. The event featured panel discussions, interactive workshops — and breakout sessions that highlighted the local food system's impact on the community. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ Community members gathered at Memorial Park—organized by Serenity House Communities—for the annual recovery walk and rally held last Wednesday to support those facing addiction. Attendees shared personal stories to raise awareness and remember individuals lost to addiction. Mid-Michigan Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan parked their Mobile STEAM Lab at Greater Heights Academy in Flint on Wednesday, September 24th at 2:18 p.m. and students learned coding, engineering and robotics (activities meant to boost access to STEM). Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ Local student innovators competed at the University of Michigan-Flint for the U-Make the Change competition on Wednesday. Students from the University of Michigan-Flint, Mott Community College, and Kettering University pitched ideas and competed for cash awards of $150, $250, $500, and $1,000 — awards that may help boost their projects. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Genesee County confirmed its first case of chronic wasting disease in a wild deer in Gaines Township as Michigan State confirmed the test and the DNR urged hunters to report sick deer to help slow the spread. Free testing kits are available at Flint's Genesee Conservation District Office—hunters should watch for signs such as weight loss and drooling. ABC 12
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Sept. 24, council member Rae Lynn Hicks urged Police Chief Matt Bade to cancel the ICE agreement after community input—residents at the meeting applauded her stance. Board members said the decision stays with Bade and noted the board will meet again on Oct. 22. MLive
- ➤ Construction on I-475 from Flint River to Carpenter Road is wrapping up this week, and workers plan to reopen the north and south lanes by the end of the week—drivers may still face some single lane closures until all lanes fully open in two to three weeks. Phase two, rebuilding the highway from Flint River to Bristol Road, will begin in spring. ABC 12
- ➤ Genesee County Sheriff’s Office will host the 4th annual Educate, Defend, Guard the Elderly Conference in Grand Blanc on Oct. 2 and Oct. 3 at the Genesys Conference and Banquet Center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 2—9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 3, where professionals can earn continuing education credits and community members learn about senior abuse prevention. Sheriff Chris Swanson will deliver a keynote speech—showing the office’s strong commitment to elder care. MLive
