COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The new $2.6M Mundy Township Senior & Enrichment Center will open in October at Mundy Miracle Commons on Hill Road—offering a 7,000-square-foot facility funded by a state grant, the Mott Foundation, and township capital. It will hold a soft opening on Sept. 29, a ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. on Oct. 3, and a Family Day on Oct. 4 with activities for all ages.  MLive
  • The Ananich Legacy Foundation will host its first annual Plate it Forward celebration on October 2 at the Flint Farmers Market—honoring Jim Ananich’s 50th birthday and supporting food distribution with St. Luke N.E.W Life Center. Proceeds will benefit community projects that increase equity and civic engagement in Genesee County.  Mid-Michigan Now

  • Rych Wicks Candles has opened in downtown Flint where customers can create custom candles using 100% soy wax for a clean burn—three friends started the store to offer a unique spot for date nights and a boost to mental wellness.  Mid-Michigan Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Residents enjoyed a taste of Germany at the Flint Farmer’s Market during an Oktoberfest celebration that featured German cuisine, Michigan beers and live music from local band Elizabeth Reed — Market Tap added a local twist by selling custom beer steins with its logo.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Horror fans in Flint have reason to celebrate as the Freakout festival takes place at Flint Local 432 on Saturday, Sept. 27—showcasing roughly 40 short horror films from Australia, Iran, Spain, the U.K., Mexico and the United States. Organizer Chris Ringler of the Flint Monster Society said the event will run from 10 a.m. until about 5 p.m. and will honor standout films with cash prizes while also featuring a special film presentation.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UM-Flint has moved its commencement ceremonies to the Dort Financial Center, which seats about 4,000 people—allowing more guests compared to the previous venue. The first ceremony is set for Dec. 14 and will have no ticketing or guest limits while also featuring a student processional and arena floor seating.  Mid-Michigan Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flint City Council approved a resolution asking the police to form a special unit to enforce loitering ordinances, but Police Chief Terence Green said officers already handle these tasks through regular patrols and a special investigative team—he noted that the new unit would not change current practices.  MLive
  • Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet said the federal government failed to protect Flint residents during the water crisis—she urged the EPA to settle pending lawsuits immediately and correct its oversight errors. Her remarks followed a court ruling that allowed Flint lawsuits to continue after the agency's dismissal request was denied.  MLive

  • Tiffany Burk from Bay Animal Hospital explained pet insurance options—helping pet owners plan care for their pets.  ABC 12
  • 10 year old Kaden Stevenson from Grand Blanc is celebrated by hundreds of classmates for becoming Kaden Blaze—a comic book superhero who fought a severe flu that caused multi organ failure and the loss of both legs. A Families Fighting Flu comic book retells his journey from Christmas 2022 and aims to raise flu awareness in the community.  Mid-Michigan Now
