COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Francis Prayer Center received an $87,000 grant from Impact100 Genesee County after winning The Big Give competition on Monday. The center will use the funds to continue its Dignity of a Good Night’s Sleep Project and donate free beds and bedding to local residents.  Mid-Michigan Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Pianist Marika Bournaki performed in the season opener for Flint Symphony Orchestra on Oct 6 — she led the event as the orchestra began its new season.  ABC 12
  • FIA announced that the MI Ink: The Art of Tattoos exhibit will be extended through December in Flint—offering local art lovers a chance to view a range of tattoo designs. The exhibit highlights creative works that reflect both traditional and modern trends.  ABC 12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Consumers Energy has rescheduled an 8-hour power outage that will affect nearly 2,900 Flint customers as crews work on a local substation to prevent unplanned outages during forecast storms. The interruption starts at 11:30 p.m. today and lasts until 7:30 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 8).  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A proposal to require drug testing for Flint elected officials—after three similar attempts failed—is headed back to City Council as Council President Ladel Lewis requested it. The resolution will amend the city code to apply testing rules to elected officials like other city employees and will become effective immediately after publication.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Genesee Health System is providing mental health support and community assistance following the Grand Blanc church tragedy—where four died and eight were injured—by offering free services at the Grand Blanc McFarlan Library this week and next, along with 24/7 hotline access.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Genesee Health System is providing free walk-in mental health support at the Grand Blanc-McFarlen Library (515 Perry Road) from Oct. 6 to Oct. 17, with service hours of noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and noon to 5 p.m. Friday, for community members coping with the church shooting that killed four and injured eight on Sept. 28.  MLive

  • Davison football coach Jake Weingartz reached his 100th career win with a 57-14 victory over East Lansing on Friday, marking a milestone in his coaching record.  MLive
  • Damian Watton and Luke Hanson powered Ortonville Brandon with a combined 386 yards and 6 touchdowns in a thrilling 3OT win over their rivals — the game ended with a 57-56 score which earned them Flint-area Friday Night Hero honors.  MLive
  • Flint-area high school sports events took place over the weekend, featuring top runners and teams from the Greater Flint CC Championships—local coaches and athletic directors were asked to email game results and photos to reporter Jonathan Szczepaniak for full coverage.  MLive
  • Flint-area high school football players are recognized as nominees after impressive Week 6 performances, including Carver Purdy's 219 rushing yards and Jake Morrow's 5 touchdowns. Voters may cast their votes multiple times until 9 a.m. on Oct. 10 to select the Football Player of the Week.  MLive
