  • The Flint Fire Department and Domino's partnered with first graders at Flint Cultural Center Academy for Fire Prevention week — showing fire safety in a smoke house and on a ride-along — and later visited homes to install or replace working smoke alarms.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • The Grand Blanc community is gathering for a healing event at Grand Blanc High School’s Don Batchelor Field today at 7 p.m. after a church tragedy; organizers said the event will enforce rules (no candles or bags allowed) and use security measures (metal detectors in place).  Mid-Michigan Now

  • Fenton Village Players is presenting Evil Dead the Musical in Flint and show times with ticket details are available online—audiences can plan to attend this unique production.  ABC 12
  • Flint Hip-Hop artist Jake The Flake will host his retirement party on Oct. 11 at the Wyndham Hotel Conference Center—he plans the event as a farewell to his performance career.  ABC 12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Flint organization is launching an accelerated savings cohort to help residents build their savings. Residents may learn more by searching for Mission Possible — MI on Facebook.  ABC 12
  • Small business owners in Genesee County may earn up to $15K in grants with support and training from the Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance. Applicants must send a Letter of Intent by Oct. 30 and, if approved, submit a full business plan by Oct. 31 — the program covers startups, micro, and small businesses.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Flint City Council is set to review a $39,970 grant proposal from EGLE to purchase a specially trained canine—one that works faster and cheaper than lab tests—to detect human waste in storm drains and outfalls and help keep local waterways safe. If approved, the program will also support nearby communities in tracing pollution in streams including the Flint River.  MLive
  • Flint City Council is voting today on a proposal to require elected officials to take drug tests when on city property or doing city business—The measure aims to ensure officials remain sober during work but faces opposition from Councilwoman Burns and concerns over enforcement raised by the ACLU.  ABC 12
  • Flint city officials are seeking Council approval for budgets and funding applications for the McKinley and Mays senior centers during today's City Council meeting. The process follows an earlier funding request that county officials turned down—due to incomplete documentation—and now sets budgets at $132,923 for McKinley and $176,003 for Mays.  MLive

  • Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Flint is hosting a free breast cancer screening event on Tuesday, October 14 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Dr. Richardson’s office on S. Linden Road — the event offers free mammograms for eligible underinsured or uninsured women.  Mid-Michigan Now
