COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Leaders at the Flushing Christian Outreach Center say they are serving more residents now than during the COVID-19 pandemic and are nearing a record high in food help. The center will host a fundraiser on October 12th from 1 pm—4 pm at 5409 West Pierson Road with food trucks, kid activities, and a silent auction to meet the growing need.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • St. Luke N.E.W. Life Center in Flint is expanding its Lawndale site — the center will add more space for its sewing social enterprise and training programs to help more people build job skills. The move is set to boost community support and self-sufficiency among its participants.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • On Tuesday, Oct. 7, hundreds gathered at Don Batchelor Field in Grand Blanc to honor the victims and support the community after a mass church killing, and officers shot the suspect at the scene—local leaders and first responders urged unity and healing in the wake of the tragedy.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared today as the 12th annual Michigan Auto Heritage Day — museums across the state are offering discounts and giveaways to celebrate Michigan’s automotive heritage.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Communities First, Inc. will host its annual A Taste of Culture event on October 11 from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the CFI Center at 1110 W. Bristol Rd. in Flint — the free event will feature global cuisine, music and art to invite cultural exchange.  Flint Beat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson hosted the Road to Restoration series in Flint—helping individuals regain driving privileges with one-on-one consultations from state staff and volunteer attorneys and immediately restoring them when proper documentation was provided. She also discussed her run for governor during her visit to the Mid-Michigan NOW studios.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • The Flint City Council voted to require elected officials to follow the same drug testing standards as city employees, which would update city codes to prohibit controlled substance use on city business & property. Some council members and the city attorney have concerns about the language while supporters say the change will boost public trust.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson spoke with Mid-Michigan NOW about her run for governor and her plan to expand the Rx Kids Program—started in Flint—into a statewide initiative.  Mid-Michigan Now

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Homes in Swartz Creek are being demolished even though the Mundy megasite project was paused nearly three months ago. Residents worry about school moves as Morrish Elementary is in talks to relocate and $40 million is set aside by the Flint and Genesee Economic Alliance — fueling uncertainty about the area's future.  ABC 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Flint-area Fall Athlete of the Week poll received votes for prep athletes during the week of Oct.1-8—nominating eight golfers and standout performers in cross country, soccer, and tennis. Local voters honored athletes for their hard work in various sports.  MLive
  • Goodrich girls golf won the Flint Metro League Girls Championship Tournament on Sept. 29 and finished league play with an 11-0 record—securing their third consecutive regional title as they prepare for the D3 state finals. Head coach Loyd Walter said the team may earn a steak dinner reservation at Ruth’s Chris if they continue to play strong.  MLive
