- ➤ Factory Two in Flint will host its 8th Annual 'Make The Space' open house on Wednesday, October 15 from 5 to 8 p.m.—residents are invited to attend. ABC 12
- ➤ Genesee County Parks has opened the annual Ghosts & Goodies event at Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad at 6140 N. Bray Road in Genesee Township, where families enjoy a 40‐minute ghost train ride, themed candy stops, and hourly magic shows today—events that will continue through Oct. 31. The longstanding celebration, which attracts up to 50,000 visitors each year, offers a safe and festive setting for trick or treating and family fun. MLive
- ➤ Flushing Christian Outreach Center will host an open house on Sunday Oct. 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. + local visitors can learn more about the center. ABC 12
- ➤ Genesee County Healthy Start and InvolvedDad will host the inaugural Dad Stroll tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Mott Park Clubhouse on Nolen Drive—this event honors fathers and father figures who help build strong families in Flint. MLive
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Chief Renye said his team is healing after a deadly shooting on September 28 when an alleged suspect rammed into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, causing four deaths, several injuries, and the gunman’s death—he added that counseling and help are available for officers and community members as the FBI and state police continue the investigation while one officer remains on paid leave. - ➤ Communities First Inc. will host A Taste of Culture on Oct. 11 from noon to 3 p.m. at 1110 W. Bristol Road—this free, family-friendly event will offer traditional dishes, live arts, dance, language lessons, and international music to bring global cultures together. MLive
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Flint’s Sloan Museum of Discovery and Longway Planetarium received a $325,000 state grant to launch the PowerUp! Workshops — a program that will teach fourth graders key manufacturing skills like computer chip production and solar panel development across Genesee, Saginaw, and Bay counties beginning summer 2026. Hemlock Semiconductor will offer expert guidance as teachers test the program through Flint Community Schools and Genesee Intermediate School District. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Flint City Council rejected an ordinance requiring drug testing for elected officials after city attorney Thomas Sparrow warned that the proposal was fraught with problems — all seven council members at the Oct.8 meeting voted against it. Several members said they would support a revised proposal once legal issues are resolved. MLive
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Flint will offer free cancer screenings for underinsured and uninsured women on Oct. 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. at McLaren Flint Comprehensive Breast Care — free mammograms will also be available for those who qualify. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ McLaren will offer free prostate screenings for Mid-Michigan veterans on Thursday, Nov. 6 at the McLaren Flint Family Medicine Residency Clinic from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. with a PSA blood test and additional diabetes, foot, and sleep screenings, and qualifying veterans will receive a Cologuard kit by appointment. - ➤ Dozens of nurses at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital have been on strike for six weeks since Sept. 1st when their contract expired and they demanded safe staffing ratios, better benefits, and higher pay. Negotiations between Teamsters Local 332 and the hospital continued on Oct. 9th with no agreement reached — the nurses hope for changes that will ensure patient safety. Mid-Michigan Now
