COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Luke N.E.W. Life Center opened a new 8300 square foot facility on north Flint last Wednesday at 3070 W Pierson Road. Former trainees work in sewing and lawn care services there—over 20 employees are active while training continues at the original center.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • A fully interactive Ghostbusters shadowcast performance will take place at the Capitol Theatre on October 18 at 7:00 p.m. in Flint—promising a spooky live take on the classic 1984 comedy for all ages.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Author Jenny Brandemuehl—of Forever Fly Free—shared her personal story on building resilience and overcoming challenges. Her account offers a clear look at her journey to help readers learn how inner strength can make a difference.  ABC 12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gold hit a record high of $4,200 per ounce with silver above $54 amid inflation, a weakening dollar and economic uncertainty, according to experts at Universal Gold Services and the University of Michigan-Flint—and they predict that high prices will continue into next year.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Local Mid-Michigan soybean farmers are facing big losses as China has cut back on buying their beans—Bill Hunt from Hunt Farms said the loss can be up to one dollar per bushel. Farmers are now looking for other buyers while shipments drop from the usual 17–19 ships to just one.  ABC 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday afternoon, JROTC cadets at Flint Southwestern Classical Academy held a flag raising ceremony during the school’s Pajama Day event. Teachers brought classes outside to watch the flag be hoisted—an act to honor past sacrifices and set the stage for raising Michigan State and Flint Community Schools flags next.  Mid-Michigan Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ashley Prew resigned from the Fenton Board of Education on Oct. 7 to run for Genesee County Probate Judge in the 2026 election. Candidates for the board seat must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old, residents for 30 days — and registered voters, with materials due in person by 4 p.m. on Oct. 15 and interviews scheduled for Oct. 21.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Memorial Healthcare is highlighting Breast Cancer Awareness Month to remind Flint residents of the importance of early detection and screening—this wellness campaign offers health tips and community resources.  ABC 12
  • Michigan's WIC program will be offline for a system update starting at 10 p.m. Oct 17 until it is restored on Oct 19 (the update will change benefits for whole grains, cheese and formula), so recipients will not be able to make purchases during this time.  ABC 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Five Flint-area teams won their MHSAA boys soccer semifinal games on Tuesday night—Fenton, Ortonville Brandon, Lake Fenton, Flint Powers Catholic and Imlay City. District championship games were held on October 15 and will continue today as teams compete for a state championship spot.  MLive
