COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Mark's Missionary Baptist Outreach Center in Flint is facing a delay in its food giveaway funding as the $25,000 approved by city council still awaits mayor sign-off, leaving the church with a $5,000 bill at the Food Bank. The church, which serves about 400 people per giveaway and has a supply truck scheduled for the 22nd, warns it will not deliver food if the funds are not released soon — urgent action is needed.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • The Genesee County Continuum of Care has raised concerns over reduced overnight shelter capacity at Center for Hope on Root Street in Flint due to renovations and a rise in homelessness noted during February’s count. The center will convert its clothing pantry into sleeping space while local agencies look for more shelter options to keep people safe — fire inspectors noted that the space also serves as a soup kitchen.  ABC 12
  • After a ruling from the Fire Marshall, the Catholic Charities Center for Hope Warming Center can now shelter only half of those it once did — the center is working with community partners to find a safe location for women and children after plans to use a gym on Root Road were dropped following safety concerns.  Mid-Michigan Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • South African singer Belinda Davids will perform The Greatest Love of All: A Tribute to Whitney Houston at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21 at the Whiting Auditorium in Flint. She has toured globally for 13 years and hopes to bring nostalgia to local fans — a tribute honoring the late star’s music.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WalletHub ranked Michigan universities for 2026 and Flint's Kettering University was one of nine schools to make the list based on student selectivity, cost and career outcomes. The ranking gives future students clear options for their higher education paths.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • University of Michigan staff at Flint campus are calling for fair pay and better working conditions as they begin their first contract negotiation. Union picketers marched outside the Riverfront Center to protest wage gaps up to 40%—including a more than $10,000 difference for similar roles compared to Ann Arbor.  Mid-Michigan Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Planners are fixing a broken electrical system—especially near Saginaw Street—and restoring fountains in Riverbank Park as part of Flint's new state park project scheduled for completion in 2026. The project involves several partners and a $28-million funding shortfall is being addressed along with a $5-million grant for improvements.  MLive

  • Tonight, undefeated Grand Blanc faces Davison in the SVL South game while fans await a high-stakes match for league titles—Fenton and Goodrich will compete on Saturday for the Flint Metro League championship.  MLive
  • Fenton Tigers won the District 27 boys high school soccer championship with a 2-1 overtime victory as senior Carlos Gomez Munoz scored the decisive goal — rallying his team from behind against Ortonville Brandon.  MLive
  • Playoff football is nearing as Flint-area teams such as Grand Blanc, Davison, Goodrich, and Montrose remain undefeated heading into the final rounds, and Fenton won its Oct. 10 game against Linden with sophomore wide receiver Rhys Sheil making a key reception—setting a strong tone for the upcoming contests.  MLive
