COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church reopened its building on Dupont Street Sunday after a firebombing in August damaged parts of the structure. Church members expressed relief to be back—repair work continues as the congregation holds services in the building while reconstruction proceeds.  ABC 12
  • FISH of Grand Blanc will host a food drive at the Kroger from Oct. 24—26 for residents to donate food.  ABC 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan State Police have released three free School Safety Toolkits to help schools improve emergency communication, after-school event planning and digital safety—resources developed with federal funding that follow a Flint safety summit and coincide with Safe Schools Week.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • The University of Michigan Board of Regents presented its $15.6B fiscal year 2026 budget at a Flint campus meeting on Oct. 16, noting a $145M boost in tuition revenue and a $1B allocation for financial aid as federal funds and support for the medical school decrease—Interim President Domenico Grasso praised UM-Flint’s enrollment growth and outlined changes in housing, athletics, and research funding.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Utility work in downtown Flint is closing several streets for upgrades. Garland Street is shut from Oct. 20 to Oct. 24, Buckham Alley will stay closed until Oct. 25, and Beach Street, Fourth Street, and Brush Alley are closed for weeks to months—Flint Downtown Development Authority officials say these measures support gas line and utility replacements.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local veterinarian at Bay Animal Hospital in Essexville warns that large Halloween decorations and candy can harm pets—calls to Animal Poison Control have increased this season. Pet owners should secure leashes, update pet ID, and keep pets indoors during festive walks to reduce hazards.  ABC 12
  • Joe Serra, who survived a heart attack and quintuple bypass surgery, and Julie Serra have donated $6 million to McLaren Flint Hospital to improve heart care. The donation will fund a specialized ECMO program, cath lab renovations, a high cholesterol clinic, and enhanced cardiac rehabilitation services — steps expected to save lives.  ABC 12
  • Mott Children’s Health Center held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct.20 in Flint to mark the launch of a new pediatric optometry clinic developed with Ferris State University to expand vision care for Genesee County children. The clinic — which will offer comprehensive eye care alongside medical, dental, behavioral health, and rehabilitation services — is expected to open to the public in early winter.  MLive
  • Glenda Kniss offered practical tips on how TruBlue can help prevent falls and improve home safety for Flint residents.  ABC 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Grand Blanc senior quarterback Jake Morrow led his team to a 57-29 win over Davison on Oct. 17—clinching back-to-back Saginaw Valley League South titles. He threw for 368 yards and five touchdowns while adding 65 rushing yards and a touchdown, strengthening his bid for Mr. Football honors.  MLive
