COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Flint's Metro Police Authority ended its ICE partnership on Oct. 22 citing workload constraints, and immigrant advocates celebrated the decision while questioning the chief's reasoning. The Flint Alliance for Immigrant Rights will host a community session at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 15 at the Neighborhood Engagement Hub—demonstrating their ongoing efforts to educate residents on immigrant rights.  MLive
  • The Hasselbring Senior Center held a ribbon cutting on Friday to mark its move to 2111 Flushing Road in the lower level of Calvary United Methodist Church. The event featured a community health fair, raffle + fish fry fundraiser.  Mid-Michigan Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Flint’s first downtown sports bar, Levels Sports Bar & Grill, opened on Friday along Saginaw Street — community and business leaders gathered at the grand opening while the bar enforced an age rule requiring women to be at least 25 and men 30.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • The North Flint Food Market, Genesee County’s first cooperative grocery store, will open at 11:30 a.m. with pre-ceremony events and officially at noon on Nov. 12—after more than 10 years of planning—at 5402 Clio Road, as community leaders mark this new step to fill a local fresh food gap.  ABC 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Swartz Creek school board rejected a $40 million offer by the Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance to buy Morrish Elementary School on Maple and Linden roads after a heated meeting—records revealed that some board members held secret talks—and launched an internal investigation while remaining open to counteroffers.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flint families will face a pause in SNAP benefits as the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced on Oct. 23 that November food assistance is on hold due to the federal government shutdown—putting about 1.4 million residents and 82,856 Genesee County recipients at risk of food insecurity.  Flint Beat

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flint Odyssey House celebrated seven years of its detox program as staff and residents honored over 5,000 lives saved by its treatment. Clients shared stories, a moment of silence was held for overdose victims, and certificates were awarded to those moving into residential care—marking a milestone for recovery efforts.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine received a $250,000 grant from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund to launch the two-year Project Thrive Program that will work with community members to design mental health services tailored for Flint teens—these free services will be available at Church Without Walls Ministries on Dupont Street beginning in 2027.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Joe Serra and his wife Julie donated $6 million to expand cardiac care at McLaren Flint Hospital, and the funds will update labs, add health programs, and improve local access to advanced treatment. The project will finish by 2029 and the unit will be renamed the Serra Heart and Vascular Institute (the largest donation in 50 years).  Mid-Michigan Now

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A historic building at 2118 Lewis St. in Flint’s Latinx District will be revitalized with $2 million in state funds + initial concept designs call for 20 residential apartments, a ground-floor retail space, and a small business incubator as redevelopment begins with site preparation and pre-construction planning. The project will boost local investment once work starts.  Mid-Michigan Now

  • Flint Firebirds are hosting a Trick or Treat event and Family FUNday at Sunday's game to invite local families to join in on the fun. The event is set for tomorrow with activities at the rink meant to engage kids and adults alike.  ABC 12
