COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Flint Institute of Arts hosts horror film screenings with The Wicker Man showing at 7:30 p.m. and additional showings of Midsommar set for Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.—other Halloween weekend events include a rock show at Chippewa Nature Center on Saturday and Sunday, a Veterans Honor Run starting at 11:11 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, and an Alice Cooper tribute with a costume contest at The Vault in Saginaw on Saturday at 8 p.m.  MLive
  • The Salvation Army Genesee Area Command is set to hold a Christmas Town giveaway in Flint that will provide families with toys, coats, pajamas, and food—sign-ups will be held November 4, November 11, and November 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Flint Citadel Corps, 211 W.   • Great Harvest Bread Co. in Grand Blanc is offering free loaves this weekend to SNAP recipients who may lose benefits. Government workers and SNAP recipients with proof can visit the store at 252 Perry Road for the offer and a 50% discount on purchases up to $20—while supplies last.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Sloan Museum of Discovery hosted its annual Cars — Bars fundraiser Thursday to raise funds for STEM and arts programs at the museum and for the Flint Institute of Music. Visitors saw over 85 historical vehicles from Dr. Bobby Mukkamala’s private collection, enjoyed music and food, and took part in a raffle for a Capitol Theatre box.  Mid-Michigan Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UM-Flint will host 'Cracks in the Pavement,' a free community symposium on civic life and democracy on Nov. 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.—the event is funded by a $495,000 Mellon Foundation grant. Keynote speakers will discuss how everyday civic practices shape democracy—community members are invited to join the day-long dialogue.  Flint Beat
  • Mott Community College renamed its campus food pantry to honor the late Dr. Venkat K. Rao—an influential doctor who supported students and fought food insecurity. The newly named pantry will continue to serve as a vital resource for students in need.  Mid-Michigan Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in mid-Michigan are bracing for a pause in SNAP benefits that will start tomorrow due to a government shutdown—many families now face a food crisis. Single mothers and working parents in Tuscola and Genesee counties are worried about feeding their children—without enough funds, they fear a tough month ahead.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley shared Halloween safety tips and urged residents to stay aware and wear protective clothing with metallic tape as police presence increases for trick or treating. Flint City Hall will host a Harvest Fest from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today—featuring candy giveaways, free food, and a Halloween movie on the back lawn.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Michigan was chosen to host OpenAI Stargate—the largest economic project in state history—in Saline Township, where OpenAI, Oracle, and Related Digital will build an advanced AI facility that is expected to create over 2,500 union construction jobs and nearly 2,000 additional local positions while using a closed loop water system to protect over 700 acres of open space.  Mid-Michigan Now

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Grand Blanc Township approved plans to convert the historic Auker Mansion’s 100-person ballroom into an event venue for weddings and small banquets, and the owners expect the venue to open in spring 2026. They own the 48.8-acre property on S. Belsay Road and plan to add a greenhouse and lodging—ensuring the changes keep the neighborhood’s character intact.  MLive
