COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Due to the continuing federal shutdown, the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library’s Saturday Community Pantry has served more households as SNAP disruptions persist—library officials say it helps fill a critical need. U.S. Rep. Kristin McDonald Rivet visited on Nov. 1 to highlight food insecurity, and the pantry runs every Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m.  Flint Beat
  • The Flint & Genesee Group held its 11th Art of Achievement Awards to honor local organizations and individuals making a positive impact. The ceremony at FIM Capitol Theatre featured 17 awards from almost 200 nominations and nearly 700 attendees—highlighting the region's strong community progress.  Mid-Michigan Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Miller Industries announced plans today to build a new 270,000 square foot facility in Fenton that will add $43 million in investment and create 167 jobs with a starting wage of $25 per hour. Local officials said the expansion will boost Michigan’s manufacturing future.  Mid-Michigan Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mott Community College hosted Taste of the Nations on Wednesday, which showcased international dishes from India, Senegal, Mexico and Italy prepared by local chefs and culinary students — funds raised will support a culinary travel abroad program.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Mott Community College held a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday to begin renovations on its Marie R. Prahl College Center. The college said the project will update student services with modern architecture + virtual reality labs to become a future hub for learning.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Flint schools are adding Esports programs to help students learn teamwork and communication — offering practice sessions that build skills for future gaming careers. Enrollment is growing as more students see the programs as a pathway to college scholarships and job opportunities.  Mid-Michigan Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Boil Water Advisory was issued for Windsor Place, River Ridge — and Lions Gate apartments after a water main broke near Irish Road and Court Street on Wednesday morning, prompting crews to begin repairs. Officials will test the water after repairs and lift the advisory when two samples taken 24 hours apart show safe levels.  ABC 12
  • Davison Township officials closed the township offices on Wednesday, November 5 after a water main break between the railroad tracks and Court Street left Irish Road without running water. Crews worked to repair the break with an eight to 10-hour timeline and shifted traffic into the center lane until repairs are complete — residents can call Genesee County Waste and Water for questions.  MLive
  • On November 5th, a water main break near Irish Road and Court Street in Davison Township led officials to close township offices and issue a boil water advisory—homes and businesses from I-69 to the railroad tracks must boil water or use bottled water. Crews are working to restore pressure and will lift the advisory once water tests confirm it is safe.  MLive
  • 72-year-old Carol Spooner in Flint is struggling to afford groceries because her partial SNAP benefits have been delayed; recipients who normally receive benefits on the third, fifth or seventh will get a partial allotment this Saturday—Spooner said she had only two dollars left from her last benefit. Local agencies are working to bolster food support for older residents facing similar financial challenges.  ABC 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Linden High School took preventive steps when a student tested positive for whooping cough by doing a deep cleaning + notifying staff and parents after the Genesee County Health Department reported the case last week. The school continues to follow health guidelines as local whooping cough cases increase.  ABC 12
