COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Catholic Charities held its seventh annual Chair-ity fundraiser and live auction at St. Michael's Conference Center in Flint where local artists turned chairs into art pieces donated for the auction. Funds raised supported Catholic Charities programs that help people in need.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Guests at Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken on Thursday helped raise funds for Families and Children Together in Flint Township. FACT provides counseling, parenting classes and support services to keep local families strong.  Mid-Michigan Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Nearly 700 people gathered at the historic FIM Capitol Theatre in downtown Flint on Nov. 5 to honor 17 honorees at the 11th annual Art of Achievement Awards. Communities First, Inc. won the DEI Champion award sponsored by MLive+ its founder Glenn Wilson said the win shows his commitment to making the community whole.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • 7th-grade football player Braxton Fountain from Grand Blanc Community Schools remembered his coach, Logan Welch, who was fatally shot on November 5th, and he vowed to dedicate his next season to honoring Welch’s caring and competitive spirit — his loss continues to affect the team.  Mid-Michigan Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Communities First, Inc. is teaming up with the Flint Institute of Arts to present the free African American Film Series for its 11th year. The series runs monthly from November through February at 1120 E. Kearsley St., with each event offering complimentary dinner, live music, film screening, and a discussion.  Flint Beat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mott Community College broke ground today on a $32.5M renovation of the Prahl College Center—designed to add three tech hubs and updated spaces to support remote learning. The project has secured $12.5M in state funds, $12.5M from the Mott Foundation, and $650,000 in congressionally directed spending and is scheduled for completion in fall 2027.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After a break-in on June 20 that left about $35,000 in equipment missing from Flint’s Whaley Park air quality monitoring station, the state approved a new site on the Crossroads Village property in Genesee Township—where electrical service will be installed and a concrete pad poured so the station can be set up before the end of the year.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flint residents on SNAP can visit City Hall now to pre-qualify for food box vouchers—these vouchers let eligible residents get 30-pound food boxes starting Monday, Nov. 10 through Nov. 14 with proof of SNAP benefits and contact info. The program, developed with the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, aims to ease the impact of paused benefits.  MLive
  • The former Westwood Manor Apartments on Clio Road are being demolished by the Genesee County Land Bank as part of its Blight Elimination Campaign, costing $760,000 to remove an abandoned and safety-risk property. Funding came through the American Rescue Plan Act and the county treasurer’s office—future plans include opening the North Flint Food Market next week to help revitalize the area.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • A jury at a federal courthouse in Flint will decide whether a Toshiba subsidiary owes DTE Energy and Consumers Energy hundreds of millions over a botched rebuild of the Ludington Pumped Storage Plant on Lake Michigan—where damaged metal components and leaks have raised safety concerns. The trial will examine evidence of the costly overhaul that left critical structures compromised.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • McLaren Flint partnered with community groups to offer free prostate health screenings to local veterans yesterday at the McLaren Flint Family Medicine Residency Clinic — the event provided PSA blood tests, doctor consultations and extra screenings for diabetes, foot health and sleep issues. Leslie Toldo from McLaren Flint said the screenings aimed to help veterans be proactive about their health.  Mid-Michigan Now
