COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On Friday, 500 unique coats that turn into sleeping bags were given out at the St. Luke N.E.W. Life Center on Lawndale Ave to help Flint's homeless people in a new partnership between three Michigan groups. The coats were made by Empowerment Plan through its workforce development program in Detroit — the project was funded by a grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and Empowerment Plan is on track to make its 100,000th coat this winter. - ➤ Menards stores in Genesee County are hosting their annual toy drive for local children as they accept new, unwrapped toys until Nov. 15—local organizations will later distribute them to kids in need. Mid-Michigan Now
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ People’s Church of Flint held a film screening on November 1 that showed the documentary Where Olive Trees Weep and drew two to three times its normal crowd; the event sparked a guided talk on tough topics like trauma and the conflict in Palestine—local groups added to the discussion. The church said it will host another film night in January that will focus on reproductive issues and abuse by clergy. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A boil-water advisory in Davison Township was lifted after officials repaired a broken water main near Irish Road and Court Street. County testing confirmed the water is safe (after two rounds of 24-hour tests) and officials thanked residents for their patience. MLive
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Grand Blanc football players honored former coach Logan Welch by wearing LW stickers on their helmets during the Friday district playoff against Clarkston and holding a moment of silence before kickoff. Welch was fatally shot at his Almont workplace on Wednesday and his legacy lives on in the players, his family, and his soon-to-be-born daughter in April — his memory remains strong in the community.
