COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Uma Strong Marshall Outreach will distribute free winter coats and winter gear today from 1 to 3 p.m. at River Park Townhomes (7002 Pemberton Drive) to Flint families through its 11th Annual Warming Bodies Through Love initiative.  Flint Beat
  • Scott Sassack, owner of Great Harvest Bread in Grand Blanc, will sleep outdoors next week to raise funds and collect toys for Whaley Children's Center in Flint — a nonprofit supporting abused and neglected children. Fifty percent of sales from Thursday through Saturday will benefit the center.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties is hosting a winter wear drive to collect hats, coats, and scarves to keep residents warm as part of their Holidays of Hope series today. Local volunteer Laura Toth donated 100 handmade hats (crafted by her mother) to support the drive.  Mid-Michigan Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Flint Festival of Lights lit up downtown on Friday, Dec. 5 with free hot chocolate, coffee, ice skating, and an ugly sweater contest offered for visitors. Organizers — including the Flint Institute of Music and Rich Kids, Inc. — hope the event becomes an annual tradition that supports local businesses.  Mid-Michigan Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Flint Community Schools dedicated the Kevelin B. Jones Video Broadcasting Center at Holmes STEM Academy on Nov. 18 to honor Superintendent Kevelin B. Jones II and equip students with tools to share their stories globally.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Flint Community Schools received a $5.3 million donation from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation on Thursday to support the demolition and design work at the old Flint Central High School site. The project will preserve the historic tower (and add modern classrooms, labs, and athletic spaces) with a new school set to open in September 2028.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Flint Housing Commission launched the Feed Flint Rent Relief Program which lets residents volunteer at the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan for a $10 rent reduction per hour. The program will begin January 1, 2026 and aims to help residents manage rising rent costs.  ABC 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michigan state health officials from MDHHS warned on Friday, Dec. 5 that delaying hepatitis B vaccination for newborns could lead to thousands of infections and lifelong liver disease; they urged caregivers to stick with the practice of vaccinating at birth.  MLive
