COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hamilton Community Health Network donated more than 100 blankets last Wednesday to support warming centers at the Center for Hope and Flint Shelter + local churches helped organize the effort to assist residents facing winter hardships.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Residents in a condemned Flint apartment complex must vacate by December 27 after enduring unsafe conditions like mold and bed bugs — officials say legal remedies are being considered to hold landlords accountable.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Flint offers a mix of holiday events this December that bring festive fun for everyone. From gingerbread workshops to live music at the market, organizers plan ways for residents to connect and celebrate local traditions.  Flint Beat
  • Flint will host its first LEGO convention at the Dort Financial Center on August 22-23, 2026. The event features professional LEGO artists, interactive zones including a Star Wars area and a medieval build zone, and supports Creations for Charity.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Kearsley High School's student council assembled grief boxes for families and donated them to Hurley Medical Center's Labor & Delivery Department on Wednesday, Dec. 17, to support Rebecca's Reason efforts. The program has aided over 400 families since it began in 2016.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • More than 140 children received every gift on their wish list during a holiday giveaway hosted by Voices for Children, United Way of Genesee County, and Tom Gores on Wednesday at the organization’s hall in Flint. The event marks the fifth year of the Gores family’s support in brightening the season for local kids.  ABC 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jessi Koehler, a STEM teacher at Freeland Elementary School and Learning Center, received a $2,000 Excellence in Education award from the Michigan Lottery today for her innovative teaching methods using dramatic play + she now qualifies for the Educator of the Year award later this school year.  MLive
  • Dye Elementary School is hosting a blanket drive to collect 600 blankets for its students; community members can donate at the school.  ABC 12

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Township officials approved a permit on Dec. 11 for AC Power to build a solar array on 28 acres at 1200 S. Linden Road. The project will protect the former GM landfill’s soil and keep soccer fields until Nov. 2026 + it will add renewable energy and boost tax revenue.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rx Kids program, which started in Flint last year (offering $1,500 during pregnancy and $500 monthly until the baby turns 1), has paused its expansion plans due to an $18.5 million cut in the state's recently enacted $645 million budget. The program will continue serving families in other areas of the state.  ABC 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Hurley Foundation received a $40,000 donation from JA Grifols Foundation on Wednesday, Dec. 17 to boost its FARMacy program that feeds 7,000 Flint patients with healthy food options.  Mid-Michigan Now
