COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At 422 West Fourth Ave., the Genesee County Housing Resource Center faces rising demand amid a shortage of 7,000 affordable homes; officials report a waiting list of about 225 people that can lead to delays of up to a year & community partners work to boost access.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Flint native Tom Gores, owner of the Pistons, and his wife Holly donated Christmas gifts to more than 140 children at Voices for Children on Wednesday evening (marking the fifth year of the event). Local partners like United Way and the Pistons mascot joined Santa to spread holiday cheer.  ABC 12
  • Flint City Council approved $80K in federal stimulus funds to complete the first four tiny homes in Catholic Charities Sacred Heart Village + the project will eventually offer 24 homes and a Community Resource Center for veterans; work was approved on Dec. 17 and is set to finish by mid-January.  MLive
  • Flint warming centers are open from December through March to offer overnight shelter, meals and daytime services for residents in need. Men can check in at Catholic Charities at 812 Root St. at 6 p.m. while women and children may go to the Shelter of Flint at 924 Cedar St. beginning at 5 p.m.  Flint Beat
  • Local first responders and residents gathered on Tuesday, Dec. 16 outside Hurley Medical Center for Hurley's Glow (a holiday event) that offers hope to pediatric patients and their families. Santa and Mrs. Claus visited to share holiday cheer inside the hospital.  MLive
  • Grace Deliverance in Flint will host a community Christmas dinner on Sun. Dec. 21 at noon. The event invites local residents to gather and celebrate the holiday season.  ABC 12
  • Flint nonprofit No Neighbor Left Behind is asking residents to donate household supplies to support families in need. Volunteer Joe Buffa said the organization relies on local contributions + accepts donations at designated drop-off points.  Mid-Michigan Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Smokin' Charlie is closing his Flint Farmers' Market booth this month as he retires after more than 20 years serving barbecue; his food truck will operate in the pavilion area for summer events.  ABC 12
  • Flint and Genesee Economic Alliance’s Small Business Support Hub awarded 25 grants to local small businesses on Thursday, Dec. 18 to fund equipment, inventory, software + hardware, furniture and consulting services.  Mid-Michigan Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Longtime ABC12 chief photojournalist Tom Brocklehurst retires after 43 years. He will shoot the Holiday Pops tradition this Saturday in Flint & is celebrated for capturing the community’s important stories.  ABC 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Residents, alumni, and parents urged the school board on Dec. 17 to reconsider plans for the new Flint Central High and preserve more of the historic building at 601 Crapo St (retaining 25% of the structure) to blend history with modern education.  MLive
  • Flint Southwestern Classical Academy remains closed until January due to a broken boiler, and repairs are underway to resume in-person classes after the holiday break.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flint development leaders faced sudden state funding cuts that threatened housing and economic projects until the Senate restored most funds Tuesday evening — local organizations remain unsure how the move will affect plans for Marian Hall and the former Knoblock Hardware building.  Mid-Michigan Now
