COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ob/Gyn Board Prep established $10,000 endowments for four groups rooted in Flint history, including Genesee County Historical Society and Whaley Historic House Museum. The funds help reduce grant writing time + secure annual payouts after each group reaches $50,000.  MLive
  • In 2025, Flint saw four major projects open including a new YMCA at Livewell on Harrison on Apr. 28 at 719 Harrison St. plus a renovated Genesee County Administration Building in July, Flint Community Schools’ new Cube in September, and a 40000sqft health facility from Michigan State University in August.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kwanzaa celebrations were held at the Flint Odyssey House on Dec. 30, and community members gathered to honor local traditions during the holiday.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Jan. 1, Michigan drivers will face a revised gas tax that increases the per-gallon revenue rate from 31 to 52 cents but offsets the hike by eliminating the 6% sales tax for a 1.4 cent per-gallon price difference—an amendment set to add $1 billion statewide and boost road repair funds in Genesee County.  ABC 12
  • The Genesee County Land Bank demolished 675 abandoned houses from Jan. 1 to Oct. 31, 2025 as part of a $57 million project that removed nearly 10,000 blighted structures countywide. It also opened a $1.9 million maintenance facility at the former James Lumber Yard in Flint this fall.  ABC 12
  • Mayor Sheldon Neeley and Police Chief Terence Green called on residents to fire off prayers — not bullets — during tonight’s New Year celebration, following a Tuesday news release urging the community to follow all laws amid an ongoing gun violence emergency.  MLive
  • Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley and Police Chief Terrence Green urged residents to forgo discharging firearms today because the custom poses risks to the community — they advocated celebrating with prayers rather than bullets.  ABC 12
