CRIME NEWS

  • Jimmy Lee Friend III pleaded guilty to second degree murder, home invasion, and five weapons-related charges after fatally shooting neighbor Brian Devionte Towns at Flint Township apartments on March 7th, 2024 — Genesee Circuit Court sentenced him on March 21st to a minimum of 17 years with an added two-year penalty for a felony firearm charge.  MLive
  • Jimmy Friend III, a 39-year-old Flint Township man, was sentenced to 17-70 years in prison for the shooting death of his neighbor Brian Towns on March 7th, 2024—he will also serve two years on a felony firearms charge.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • A tribute show to Prince comes to Flint at the Capitol Theatre on April 4th at 8 p.m.—Marshall Charloff and the Purple xPeRIeNCE will perform in an event that Prince endorsed before his passing. Genesee County residents can get a discount on tickets.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Comma Bookstore & Social Hub in Flint will host The Creative Lineage Project: A 2Gen Performing Arts Workshop Series for high school students and their caregivers; the series will begin with a spoken-word poetry workshop on Saturday, March 29 and include lunch before a second session on Saturday, April 5.  Flint Beat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Beverly Biggs-Leavy, a Flint City Council candidate, was ordered by the Michigan Department of Attorney General to remove a claim in her campaign ad that she is the incumbent in the upcoming special election. The cease and desist letter was issued this week—ensuring she corrects her advertising.  MLive
  • On Tuesday, March 25, the U.S. Department of Agriculture canceled $4.3 million in emergency food shipments that would have provided 2 million meals to Michigan food banks—143 loads meant for seven banks serving 83 counties. The Food Bank Council of Michigan said the cancellation has impacted plans to assist many in need.  MLive
  • Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley told the City Council during a budget hearing on March 26 that his 2025-2026 package—which uses $4.2 million in rainy day funds and $2 million in federal stimulus dollars—is the strongest he has put forward since 2019. He detailed plans to boost public safety, upgrade street lighting, and raise income tax collections with state help to support local growth.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Comcast granted $50,000 to the Greater Flint Health Coalition to boost its Flint Healthcare Employment Opportunities program — a training initiative for Genesee County residents that will offer digital literacy, computer skills, and job preparation. The grant funds sessions led by trained Digital Navigators to improve resume building and interview skills.  MLive
